MATCH REPORTS
Perrywood Hurricanes 4 – 2 Knaphill Vipers FC
16th November
The Hurricanes knew they had to win this game after an unlucky start to the season and were hoping to begin a successful fight-back. With the pitch at Reigate Priory unplayable, a hasty search was in order to secure an alternative venue for the game and one was found at Walton-on-the-hill.
From the off, the Hurricanes put pressure on the opposition and most of the start of the game was in the Knaphill half with numerous attacks from the lads in orange, and several corners won. Eventually, the Hurricanes pushed forward and Captain Berti Musto provided a looping ball off of the outside of his boot towards Russell who controlled and half-volleyed it into the goal giving them a well-deserved lead. Knaphill stepped up the challenge and begin a run along the left wing which lead to a shot but goalie Andrew English found this no challenge as he was simply able to watch this effort hit the post.
Perrywood continued to play well for the rest of the first half and the referee appeared to be enjoying the game a little too much when he forgot to blow the whistle and played at least 5 extra minutes.
The second half continued along the same vein with Perrywood laying wave after wave of pressure on the Knaphill defenders. The Hurricanes had a shot on target blocked which meant another corner for Christian Price-Wright who swung the ball straight into their defensive wall. He got another chance to cross the ball back in towards Daniel Rusling who was at the far post and produced a clinical finish for his first goal of the season.
The Vipers once again began to press forward and proved what a strong opposition they were but the impressive Shahil Pallana refused to let them through and was sweeping up at the back. Jake Perchard and Alex Cassin also proved their worth in defence and provided some excellent balls down the line. A lapse in concentration from the Hurricanes allowed the opposition to gain one back but straight from the re-start the ball came to Musto; he passed to Iris Gjoni who flicked the ball through to Russell for his second goal, Perrywood’s third. Christian Price-Wright got yet another opportunity to show off his solid corner-taking skills with a ball to Musto. He touched it towards Russell who blasted it into the net for his second hat-trick so far this season.
A moment of complacency from the Hurricanes allowed Knaphill a second goal but the final score was a worthy 4-2 victory for the home team. Special mentions should go to Stefano Sileo who battled throughout the game along the left wing and Ben Wright in midfield who fought hard in support of his captain, battling for every ball. Iris Gjoni proved he is the perfect up front partner for James Russell and if they can keep up today’s form, will be an excellent combination throughout the season. It was impossible to distinguish between Musto and Pallana for Lad of the Match so the coach and Manager had to part with two medals this week. Keep it up!
Team: English, Perchard, Pallana, Cassin, Price-Wright, Wright, Musto, Rusling, Sileo, Gjoni, Russell, Harrington, Buchan, Tansley.
Hurricanes Emerge From the Fog
Perrywood Hurricanes 6 – 0 Laleham Youth
12th October
I think the lads won’t mind me saying that the season has not
got off to the best of starts and the time had arrived today when the Hurricane
had to make a crucial decision about their gameplay. It was the manager and
coach’s first opportunity to choose their team from a full squad which also
included an injury-free captain Berti Musto for the first time this season. The
lads received a surprise visit from a professional Physiotherapist who lead them
through a thorough warm-up and stretching session which certainly got the
adrenalin pumping through their veins, preparing them for the battle ahead. She
proved quite a hit with the dads too!!!
Despite it being a foggy Sunday morning, something in the team had clicked into
place and more or less from the off, it was clear to see that our boys meant
business and were determined to prove their worth in Division 2. It didn’t take
very long before Connor Newbold got an early goal and the scene was set for a
Hurricanes attack with the lads in orange dominating much of the play throughout
the first half. James Russell, top scorer from last season, proved his skill and
soon followed with a second goal giving the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead at half time.
If the first half was exciting, there was plenty more still to come in the
second with the supporters not having time to take their eyes off the action for
more than a few moments, as Connor had scored his second goal almost as soon as
the whistle had blown. He was on fire today and produced attack after attack,
leaving the Laleham lads standing on many occasions. The combination of Newbold
and Russell up front appears to be a match made in heaven and with Christian
Price-Wright, Berti Musto and newcomer Iris Gjoni supporting them by providing
pass after pass, giving them numerous opportunities to attack towards goal. If
it wasn’t for the safe hands of the Laleham keeper who was an obvious choice for
their man of the match, it could have been a double-figure win for the
Hurricanes.
James Russell continued to push forward and some wonderful displays of accurate
passing between Price-Wright, Ben Wright and Musto made the match a spectators’
delight. Further excellent play from Iris Gjonis and Connor Newbold provided
further efforts on goal until James Russell chanced his luck with his left foot
and scored the forth. The hurricanes were still not content with their lead and
continued to press forwards, but a long-range volly from Christian price-Wright
beat the goalie but went just wide of the post.
Berti Musto who had been greatly missed during recent games provided Connor
Newbold with an amazing targeted through-ball which gave Connor the opportunity
of scoring a hat-trick, hopefully not his last of the season; 5-0. This spurred
on James Russell who was determined to match this achievement and he battled
time and time again to score another. Connor almost scored his forth when a
forceful shot ricocheted off the crossbar and bounced off the line – Russell
thought he would get in on the action and he had a blast at goal from the
rebound, only for his effort to also hit the post…. It would have been easier
for the ball to have gone into the net but James Russell saved his most glorious
goal until the end after a lovely pass from Connor which Russell picked up and
blasted into the right side of the goal to give him a hat-trick and the
Hurricanes a 6-0 win. This was a well-deserved victory for a team who now appear
to have settled into the new season and have found their form. With two
hat-tricks scored in one game the Hurricanes must now continue the season with
this positive gameplay which should take them forward in the league.
Newcomer this season, Max Tansley had a great game at left-midfield, as did Alex
Cassin, Shahil Pallana and Jack Farmery who proved solid in defence but Connor
Newbold went home with a well-deserved lad of the match medal round his neck.
